Fugazzi Grand (660-641)

660. "Stylo" (Gorillaz, Plastic Beach, 2010)
Can't wait to watch the Gorillaz concert I recorded after my draft tonight.

659. "Long Way to Go" (Liam Finn & Eliza Jane, Champagne in Seashells, 2009)
Tasty E.P., I very much look forward to what Liam Finn will do next.

658. "Everyday I Love You Less and Less" (Kaiser Chiefs, Employment, 2005)
When Weezer and Foo Fighters toured together in 2005, these guys opened for them. I missed their performance by about 5 minutes.

657. "Born Into a Light" (Ryan Adams, Cardinology, 2008)
Sorry, Kemper. My list.

656. "What if I Do?" (Foo Fighters, In Your Honor, 2005)
What a great idea for a double album.

655. "Pretty Penny" (Stone Temple Pilots, Purple, 1994)
"she was loved, and we all will miss her"

654. "War on War" (Wilco, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, 2002)
A little trivia for you. This was the first song ever featured on a Paste sampler.

653. "Nobody's Fool" (Kenny Loggins, Essential Kenny Loggins, 1988)
Caddyshack 2 Theme, and a favorite of Mr Joe Dahms.

652. "At Seventeen" (Janis Ian, Between the Lines, 1975)
Another song I believe that I ranked too low. This should be much higher. Was performed on the first ever episode of SNL.

651. "There Goes My Life" (Kenny Chesney, When the Sun Goes Down, 2004)
Not to many country songs here, but I can't deny that I like this song a lot.

650. "It's the End of the World..." (R.E.M., Document, 1987)
Say it with me...."Leonard Bernstein !! "

649. "Maniac" (Michael Sembello, 80's Gold, 1983)
Go to youtube and watch the performance on American Bandstand. Looks like Mike Schwingle, for Christs sake.

648. "The Arm" (Islands, Arm's Way, 2008)
One of my favorite albums from 2008.

647. "The Crook of My Good Arm" (Pale Young Gentlemen, Black Forest, 2008)
My daughter loves to sing this song, and replace arm with ear, belly, knee. Just makes her laugh so hard.

646. "Don't Stop Now" (Guided By Voices, Under the Bushes..., 1996)
"cock of the block. don't stop now. don't stop now."

645. "Crazy For You" (Madonna, Something to Remember, 1995)
Jill, did you see this coming ?

644. "#9 Dream" (John Lennon, Working Class Hero, 1974)
R.E.M. does a really nice cover of this, too.

643. "Save Room" (John Legend, Once Again, 2006)
I have two John Legend albums. One I like, and one I don't. This is from the one I like.

642. "Only a Broken Heart" (Tom Petty, Wildflowers, 1994)
This is my favorite Petty album, Heartbreakers or not.

641. "The Power of Love" (Huey Lewis & the News, Greatest Hits, 1985)
Another Joe Dahms favorite.

Fugazzi Grand (680-661)

680. "Ants Marching" (Dave Matthews Band, Under the Table and Dreaming, 1994)
I've never seen Dave live, and I don't know if I ever will, but I really enjoy their first three records, and this will always be a favorite.

679. "St Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)" (John Parr, St Elmo's Fire, 1985)
That mullet !

678. "Waitin on a Sunny Day" (Bruce Springsteen, The Rising, 2002)
It's a shame that it took something like 9/11 to get the band back together, but the result of that reunion was this record.

677. "Los Angelenos" (Billy Joel, Streetlife Serenade, 1974)
One of my favorite, lesser known Billy Joel songs.

676. "The Piano Has Been Drinking" (Tom Waits, Small Change, 1976)
Are you proud of me, Dr Hnasko ?

675. "I'll Be That Girl" (Barenaked Ladies, Stunt, 1998)
I hope the breakup of Page and Robertson is temporary.

674. "Friend or Foe" (Adam Ant, Friend or Foe, 1982)
This was one of the first cassettes I ever owned.

673. "Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?" (She & Him, Volume One, 2008)
I wonder how long this partnership will last, but I hope a while.

672. "I and Love and You" (The Avett Brothers, I and Love and You, 2009)
Welcome to the heavy rotation...

671. "More News from Nowhere" (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Dig Lazarus Dig, 2008)
Very unique vocal style, and a really good record.

670. "Army" (Ben Folds Five, Reinhold Messner, 1999)
Very funny story. We're in the office at work on a really slow day, and the ipod is on shuffle. An older man comes in and sits down with me. This song comes on, and within seconds, Joe and Andy each run over to the dock to hit STOP before you know what is said. Priceless.

669. "By the Way" (Union Pulse, Angel on a Wire, 2007)
Remember the name James Redding, everybody.

668. "A Better Day" (Backyard Tire Fire, Bar Room Semantics, 2005)
Really good band I've been getting into as of late.

667. "No Excuses" (Alice in Chains, Jar of Flies, 1993)
Quite possibly my favorite E.P. of all time.

666. "Devil's Haircut" (Beck, Odelay, 1996)
This list was very carefully crafted. Did you see what I did there ?

665. "Hey There Fancypants" (Ween, Quebec, 2003)
This is just fun.

664. "I Never" (Rilo Kiley, More Adventurous, 2004)
Jenny Lewis is the owner of my favorite voice, currently.

663. "Pretty Maids All in a Row" (Eagles, Hotel California, 1980)
Individually, the Eagles are kind of creepy, but collectively, a fine band.

662. "Believe" (Elton John, Made in England, 1995)
Bernie Taupin was trying to write a song like "Imagine". For the most part, Elton John's albums since 1977 have been bad, but Made in England is really good.

661. "Sidewalk" (Starlight Mints, Drowaton, 2006)
Heard this band on World Cafe. Don't really know much about them, but the two albums I have are pretty decent.

Fugazzi Grand (700-681)

700. "Annie Waits" (Ben Folds, Rockin the Suburbs, 2001)
I'll give you the short version. I did not work Tuesdays in 2001, and on 9/11, I woke up, showered and went to Best Buy to buy this record, and wondered all the way home why the cashier seemed to have been crying. Lesson learned is that I check the news before buying records now.

699. "Never Had Nobody Like You" (M Ward, Hold Time, 2009)
Not too happy that Matt sold out to a beer commercial, though.

698. "Supply and Demand" (Amos Lee, Supply and Demand, 2006)
Gonna be at Farm Aid at Miller Park on my birthday.

697. "Earth & Venus" (Andy Davis, Let the Woman, 2007)
This was an impulse buy after seeing an ad in Paste. Not on the sampler, not even a review, just the ad. It paid off.

696. "You Know I'm No Good" (Amy Winehouse, Back to Black, 2007)
Featuring the Dap-Kings !

695. "Prizefighter" (Eels, Hombre Lobo, 2009)
Mark Oliver Everett, you sad, brilliant bastard you.

694. "No One Knows" (Queens of the Stone Age, Songs for the Deaf, 2002)
One of the better rock songs of the past 10 years.

693. "Baloney Again" (Mark Knopfler, Sailing to Philadelphia, 2000)
This song is important to me.

692. "Magic" (Olivia Newton-John, Gold, 1980)
Kind of a disco feel to it, I've always dug it.

691. "Der Kommissar" (After the Fire, Radio Hits of the 80's, 1983)
Another song that just screams 80's.

690. "1901" (Phoenix, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, 2009)
This is a band I will keep an eye on for a while.

689. "Summersong" (The Decemberists, The Crane Wife, 2006)
The Decemberists are the masters of the concept album in the 21st century.

688. "Father Lucifer" (Tori Amos, Boys For Pele, 1996)
This is one of my favorite headphones records. Turn off the rest of the world for an hour and feel the pain.

687. "Friendly Fire" (Sean Lennon, Friendly Fire, 2006)
I know my dad doesn't want to hear this, but this is a really good record.

686. "Amoreena" (Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, 1970)
Used in the opening credits of "Dog Day Afternoon".

685. "Nights on Broadway" (Bee Gees, Main Course, 1975)
A huge thank you to Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake for creating one of my all time favorite SNL sketches. Of course, this is the song they are doing a parody of.

684. "Two States" (Pavement, Slanted and Enchanted, 1992)
One of the best albums of the 90's.

683. "You Better You Bet" (The Who, Face Dances, 1981)
One day, I'm gonna sit down and really dive into the old Who stuff, and figure out if I like this band or if I don't. Either way, I'll always love this song.

682. "In the Garage" (Weezer, The Blue Album, 1994)
Most of what I wrote before I released my first book last year stayed "in the garage".

681. "Beverly Hills" (Weezer, Make Believe, 2005)
One of the few highlights of what is by far their worst record. This album only has about 4 or 5 songs that I like, the rest is shit. I may shave the bad ones off, and call this an E.P.

Fugazzi Grand (720-701)

720. "Bound for the Floor" (Local H, As Good As Dead, 1996)
When I saw them open for STP in 1996, I thought they were awful, but I still like this recording.

719. "Fly Away" (Lenny Kravitz, 5, 1998)
Roxie Roker and a nice Jewish man make love, and 34 years later, the product of that love writes and records a song that ends up on this list 12 years after that.

718. "Everybody Wants You" (Billy Squier, Absolute Hits, 1982)
I enjoy "Chuck", I just don't get it.

717. "A More Perfect Union" (Titus Andronicus, The Monitor, 2010)
Matt Schewe coming through again. Saw them on Fallon last night, and they rocked.

716. "White, Discussion" (Live, Throwing Copper, 1994)
"I talk of freedom, and you talk of the flag"

715. "For Your Love" (The Yardbirds, Shape of Things, 1965)
I read that Eric Clapton hated playing on this song.

714. "Tennessee Rose" (The Deep Vibration, Veracruz, 2008)
Awesome E.P.

713. "Whoomp! There It Is" (Tag Team, Whoomp! There It Is, 1993)
"slam dunk it, stick it, flip it and ride that B double O T Y, oh my"

712. "Modern Woman" (Billy Joel, The Bridge, 1986)
Musically, I don't know what the heck is going on here, but it's a lot of fun to sing.

711. "Wash Jones" (Squirrel Nut Zippers, The Inevitable, 1995)
I miss the zippers.

710. "Run-Around" (Blues Traveler, Four, 1994)
This song and "Hootie" owned 1994.

709. "My Egyptian Grammar" (The Fiery Furnaces, Widow City, 2007)
It's so hard to explain this band's sound, but I love what I hear.

708. "When I'm Sixty Four" (The Beatles, Sgt Pepper's, 1967)
Three of my top ten favorite albums of all time are Beatles records, and this is most certainly one of them.

707. "On Your Birthday" (Jim Boggia, Misadventures in Stereo, 2008)
Add this to the pile of great artists I would have never known without Paste.

706. "Come Pick Me Up" (Ryan Adams, Heartbreaker, 2000)
What a great album. I will never tire of this.

705. "Cinder and Smoke" (Iron & Wine, Our Endless Numbered Days, 2004)
It took some time, but I'm really into this now. There was a stretch last month where I listened to this album twice a day for about two weeks.

704. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (The Beatles, Meet the Beatles, 1964)
I know Rolling Stone has this as the 2nd greatest Beatles song of all time, but I can, and will name many other Beatles songs that I prefer to this one. It's still great though.

703. "Lazybones" (Harry Connick Jr, 25, 1992)
As I type this, I realize that I should have ranked this song much higher. I sing this all the time to Gracie, this should be way higher, but I promised not to make any changes once I started to reveal the list. I guess some mistakes will happen on a list of this size.

702. "Right Hand on My Heart" (The Whigs, Mission Control, 2008)
Decent record, and one of the better Paste songs from 2008.

701. "Southtown Girls" (The Hold Steady, Boys & Girls in America, 2006)
This might be their best album.

Fugazzi Grand (740-721)

740. "Feeling Alright" (Joe Cocker, Joe Cocker!, 1969)
I love this song whether Cocker or Belushi sing it.

739. "Summer, Highland Falls" (Billy Joel, Turnstiles, 1976)
"it's either sadness or euphoria"

738. "I Feel Like a Bullet (In the Gun of Robert Ford)" (Elton John, Rock of the Westies, 1975)
I try so hard to hit the high notes, and I fail every time.

737. "Scare Easy" (Mudcrutch, Mudcrutch, 2008)
I pretty much like anything Tom Petty does.

736. "Relator" (Yorn & Johansson, Break Up, 2009)
When I heard about this project, I rolled my eyes, but I genuinely like the album.

735. "Charlotte's Web" (Annie and the Beekeepers, Annie and the Beekeepers, 2007)
Remember the name.

734. "Walls (Circus)" (Tom Petty, She's the One, 1996)
The song that plays for the opening and closing credits of one of my all time favorite movies.

733. "Have Mercy on the Criminal" (Elton John, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, 1973)
This is one of my favorite Elton albums, and this is a really good recording.

732. "Come Out and Play" (The Offspring, Smash, 1994)
16 years later, still a fun song.

731. "Swingin' Party" (The Replacements, Tim, 1985)
By far, my favorite Mats album.

730. "Casino Queen" (Wilco, A.M. , 1995)
I'm hot and cold with Wilco (didn't like the self titled one), but this is still a favorite.

729. "Big Shot" (Billy Joel, 52nd Street, 1978)
One of the many concert staples at a Billy Joel show.

728. "Rags to Riches" (Tony Bennett, Fifty Years, 2004)
Used perfectly in Good Fellas.

727. "Out of Touch" (Hall & Oates, The Very Best, 80's)
I still remember the "World Premier" for the video.

726. "You Might Think" (The Cars, Heartbeat City, 1984)
One of my earlier MTV memories.

725. "Turn off the Light" (Nelly Furtado, Whoa Nelly, 2000)
"follow me, follow me, follow me down down down down"

724. "Here Comes a Regular" (The Replacements, Tim, 1985)
Watch out for "Tim" when I eventually rank my all time favorite albums.

723. "Your House" (Alanis Morissette, Jagged Little Pill Acoustic, 2005)
The "hidden track", re-recorded 10 years later.

722. "I'm Losing You" (Corinne Bailey Rae, Instant Karma, 2007)
This is a live recording of a Lennon cover. Great vocalist. My sister would "switch teams" for her.

721. "Hide and Seek" (Imogen Heap, Speak For Yourself, 2005)
I'm not gonna lie to you. This made the list because of SNL. And because of it, my daughter knows all the words.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Fugazzi Grand (760-741)

760. "B is For Brutus" (The Hives, Tyrannosaurus Hives, 2004)
This band is pure energy, and this is my favorite Hives record.

759. "Train in Vain" (The Clash, London Calling, 1979)
The closing track of London Calling, also known as "Stand By Me".

758. "Just Pretend" (The Bens, The Bens, 2004)
Awesome E.P. by Ben Folds, Ben Kweller and Ben Lee.

757. "Born" (Over the Rhine, Drunkard's Prayer, 2005)
A beautiful poem.

756. "Georgia on My Mind" (Ray Charles, Genius, 1960)
One of the greatest singers of all time. Nothing more to say.

755. "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" (Robert Palmer, The Very Best, 1986)
"I was only trying to be nice, only trying to be nice"

754. "Cum on Feel the Noize" (Quiet Riot, Metal Health, 1983)
I learned from my good friend Maria that this is a cover. Never realized that until about 6 months ago.

753. "(I Could Only) Whisper Your Name" (Harry Connick Jr, She, 1994)
This is the song that put Harry Connick Jr on the radio.

752. "Big Me" (Foo Fighters, Foo Fighters, 1995)
Great song, great video, and hey, weezer covers this in concert.

751. "Goodbye West Coast" (Matt Sharp, Matt Sharp, 2004)
This is a really good "chill" record. Nothing like what you've expected from The Rentals.

750. "I'm Your Daddy" (Weezer, Raditude, 2009)
I sing this to Gracie all the time, and she sings, "I'm your daughter".

749. "Conquest" (Tapes n Tapes, Walk It Off, 2008)
This album is awesome, discovered these guys watching a "Human Giant" marathon.

748. "The Ocean" (Led Zeppelin, Houses of the Holy, 1973)
The Beastie Boys sampled it on "She's Crafty", great riff.

747. "Into the Blue" (Rooney, Eureka, 2010)
I would have seen them recently had they not opened for Hanson.

746. "I Love You, But Goodbye" (Langhorne Slim, Be Set Free, 2009)
I had to say this 2 and a half years ago.

745. "Smile" (Tony Bennett, Fifty Years, 2004)
I've heard that this was Michael Jackson's all time favorite song.

744. "Tropicalia" (Beck, Mutations, 1998)
Get. This. Album.

743. "Hang Fire" (The Rolling Stones, Tattoo You, 1981)
On the way to Pepino's a few weeks back, I realized that I totally forget this song, and had to bump something.

742. "Runaway" (Wyclef Jean, The Ecleftic, 2000)
"ain't no samples, this is original"

741. "We Are the World" (USA for Africa, Single, 1985)
The star power alone is amazing. Thumbs down to the remake, though. Thumbs way down.

Fugazzi Grand (780-761)

780. "Airbag" (Radiohead, OK Computer, 1997)
This is the album most of my friends say is "genius", and it look a long time for me to get into it. I appreciate Radiohead, but I can't say I'm a huge fan. I have to be in the right mood, and I don't know if a Radiohead live show would be best suited for me. That being said, the recordings are really good, and there are a few songs that I had to include here.

779. "Unbelievable" (EMF, Party Hard 2000, 1990)
This reminds me of high school.

778. "Old Dirt Hill" (Dave Matthews Band, Stand Up, 2005)
Haven't really liked the long players since "Before These Crowded Streets", but every DMB album has some instant classics. I really like this tune.

777. "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" (Elton John, Blue Moves, 1976)
Elton John: the essential album artist of the 70's.

776. "She" (Elvis Costello, The Very Best..., 1999)
A beautiful song, not much more to say.

775. "Muscle n Flo" (Menomena, Friend and Foe, 2007)
A nod to Matt Schewe for this tasty referral. I see my editor, Danny Forst, is also a fan.

774. "Everywhere With Helicoptor" (Guided By Voices, Universal Truths and Cycles, 2002)
Classic Pollard.

773. "Places Named After Numbers" (Frank Black, Frank Black, 1993)
Eventually, I will start to fill out my Pixies and Black Francis collection. This is awesome.

772. "Sleeping With the Television On" (Billy Joel, Glass Houses, 1980)
This album will always, always be a "desert island disc" for me. There is not an album I've listened to more in my life, and I don't see a new champion anytime soon.

771. "Breakup Song" (Greg Kihn, True Kihnfessions, 1981)
This song reminds me of living in Mauston. Big radio hit when we lived up there.

770. "Sweet Dreams" (Eurythmics, Ultimate, 1983)
Annie Lennox has one of the best voices I've ever heard. I have a great cover of her doing "Bridge Over Troubled Water" on my ipod, and it's one of the most played songs in my iTunes.

769. "Swimming Pools" (Thao, We Brave Bee Stings and All, 2008)
This is a running theme: if I stumble upon an unused $10,000 iTunes gift card anytime soon, this will be a definite purchase.

768. "Peaches" (PUSA, PUSA, 1995)
I call them PUSA, because I'm an arrogant prick.

767. "Young Turks" (Rod Stewart, The Very Best..., 1981)
Not sure what a "turk" is, and I'm not sure he's saying "Young Turks". The owner of one of my favorite pizzeria's, Leonardo's in Mequon, quoted this song in his senior yearbook.

766. "Travelin' Prayer" (Billy Joel, Piano Man, 1973)
When I started dating Amber, I burned a playlist for her with this song as the opening track, because of her 2 hour drives home. Always been a favorite of mine.

765. "Paperback Writer" (The Beatles, Single, 1966)
Everytime I place a Beatles song on this list, I'm amazed at how low I have it ranked. This song is amazing! And I am a paperback writer...so I should have ranked it higher.

764. "Bits and Pieces" (The Dave Clark Five, The Hits, 2008)
These guys do not get the recogntion they deserve, they were hit making machines in the 60's, and the inspiration for the movie, "That Thing You Do", written by Tom Hanks. This is his favorite band.

763. "Soft Pedals" (Modern Skirts, All of Us in Our Night, 2008)
I wish I would have seen them at Summerfest this year. This is a great song, and quite an enjoyable record.

762. "The Mess We're In" (PJ Harvey, Stories from the City, 2000)
A wonderful duet with Thom Yorke. "The Roper" got me into PJ Harvey last year.

761. "Sympathy for the Devil" (The Rolling Stones, Beggars Banquet, 1968)
Forgive me if I've already said this, but I would have given anything to see these guys in their prime, in a huge stadium.

Fugazzi Grand (800-781)

800. "Acts of Man" (Midlake, The Courage of Others, 2010)
The first and only album I ever bought on lala.com. I hope iTunes starts offering a streaming subscription soon.

799. "Simple Twist of Fate" (Bob Dylan, Dylan, 2007)
Years ago, I got a free 10 song sampler from Rolling Stone magazine, and this was featured on it. The first Dylan song I really embraced.

798. "Talkin' Alien Abduction Blues" (Dan Bern, Favorites, 2010)
Howard Goldstein introduced me to Dan Bern in 2003. Great songwriter, I think he would be a great live show, too.

797. "Mass Romantic" (New Pornographers, Mass Romantic, 2000)
Neko Case and Co know what the hell they are doing. It's about time I pick up the new one.

796. "Always Crush Me" (Guided By Voices, Alien Lanes, 1995)
Those of you who know me well enough know this is my favorite album...ever.

795. "Forced to Love" (Broken Social Scene, Forgiveness Rock Record, 2010)
It took a few listens for me to be fully on board, but in a short period of time, this tune has slipped into the heavy rotation on my ipod.

794. "Big Daddy C" (The Rentals, Seven More Minutes, 1999)
A record I come back to often. Not sure about what the hell their doing these days, but this will always be good to me.

793. "I Got You" (Stone Temple Pilots, No 4, 1999)
It's about crack, I think, but it's still a great song. I don't even know what "crack" is.

792. "Seven Days" (Sting, Ten Summoner's Tales, 1993)
Go ahead, make your fun. I own and enjoy a Sting album.

791. "Eden Was a Garden" (Roman Candle, Oh Tall Tree in the Ear, 2009)
Another great artist I discovered through Paste. Wanna pick this up soon, too.

790. "Carry the Zero" (Built to Spill, Keep It Like a Secret, 1999)
Sonically, one of the best sounding bands out there.

789. "Lowell, Ma" (Death Cab For Cutie, We Have the Facts..., 2000)
I go back and forth between this and "The Photo Album" as my favorite Death Cab records.

788. "Thing About Trouble" (Doug Burr, On Promenade, 2007)
This is a timeless ballad that I will love forever.

787. "Honesty" (Billy Joel, 52nd Street, 1978)
This is a true story. Billy Joel wrote the music first, and the original lyric used in rehearsal was "sodomy". It worked out in the end.

786. "Mandy" (Barry Manilow, Essential Manilow, 1974)
I will get more flack for this song than any other on this list.

785. "Narcolepsy" (Ben Folds Five, The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner, 1999)
I miss the band.

784. "Blue Eyes" (Elton John, The Very Best..., 1982)
I once included this on a mixtape for an old girlfriend. She had green eyes. It didn't work out.

783. "In A Big Country" (Big Country, 20th Century Masters, 1983)
Essential 80's sound.

782. "Somebody That I Used to Know" (Elliott Smith, Figure 8, 2000)
Best record by far.

781. "Working Class Hero" (John Lennon, Working Class Hero, 1970)
There are some great covers of this song out there, this is still the best version.

Fugazzi Grand (820-801)

820. "You! Me! Dancing!" (Los Campesinos, Hold On Now Youngster, 2008)
Called Kemper a few years back and said, "I'm at Best Buy. Make a recommendation for me. This was what he chose. Thank you !

I've turned my boy Jamie on to this recently. Not physically...

Every Pollard album has 3 or 4 instant classics, and this is one of them.

It would have been fun to see where this band could have gone.

Just a really poppy song sung by creepy lookin' dudes.

I've been hit or miss on Ben Folds as of late, but this is far and away the best track on his latest album.

"God is a concept, by which we measure our pain." A truer lyric has never been written.

801. "Alive" (Pearl Jam, Ten, 1991)

One of the more interesting singles of the past 10 years.

I'm sure my grandchildren's grandchildren will look back and say, "Did he really think that was a Top Thousand song?" Remember, this isn't a list of "best", it's "favorite". It's so cheesy, but I love nachos.

941. "Jefferson Jericho Blues" (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Mojo, 2010)

One of the last great Black Crowes songs.

970. "Via Chicago" (Wilco, Summerteeth, 1999)
I think this is my favorite Wilco album.

969. "Little Jimmy the Giant" (Guided By Voices, Suitcase, 2000)
A "throwaway" demo, I'm telling you, this guy is a genius songwriter.

968. "U N Me" (The Watson Twins, Talking To You Talking To Me, 2010)
An early favorite of the 2010 Paste sampler tunes.

967. "Vegetarian Restaurant" (Aberfeldy, Young Forever, 2004)
The power of the celebrity playlist. Discovered these guys reading Elijah Wood's playlist. He loves them, and now I do too.

966. "Taco Wagon" (Young Fresh Fellows, This One's For the Ladies, 1989)
A Todd Kemper referral. Fun record.

965. "Oh Yeah" (Yello, Stella, 1987)
"Day Bow Bow"

964. "We Didn't Start the Fire (Billy Joel, Storm Front, 1989)
Musically terrible, but so fun to sing.

963. "All Grown Up" (Elvis Costello, Mighty Like A Rose, 1991)
Great vocal...great song.

962. "You Make My Dreams" (Hall & Oates, The Very Best... , 80's)
Jake Fogelnest said it the best...."If you say you don't have Hall & Oates on your ipod, you're lying"

961. "Australia" (The Shins, Wincing the Night Away, 2007)
This is a great band, and James Mercer is a great singer.

Fugazzi Grand (1000-981)

And now, the most anticipated playlist of all time (I'm so full of my self....such a self-promoter). MMM, I think we gotta start it with a positive jam....

1000. "Positive Jam" (The Hold Steady, Almost Killed Me, 2004)
Becoming one of my favorite bands, saw them for the first time at Summerfest.

999. "#2 in the Home Model Series" (Guided By Voices, Vampire on Titus, 1992)
Robert Pollard is the most prolific songwriter of all time. "My favorite son has found, my favorite son has found my gun"

998. "Fix Up, Look Sharp" (Dizzee Rascal, Boy in da Corner, 2004)
I think this was a Tiffany Herrera referral, I love the combination of hip hop and Billy Squier samples.

997. "The Delivery Man" (Elvis Costello, The Delivery Man, 2004)
"In a certain light, he looked like Elvis. In a certain way, he felt like Jesus". Your oldest friends are not always your best friends. Billy Joel is my oldest friend, musically speaking, but I think Elvis Costello is my best friend.

996. "Sell Sell Sell" (Barenaked Ladies, Maroon, 2000)
I think this is my favorite BNL record, this is a great story, and fun to sing in the car.

995. "Slowly (Oh So Slowly) (Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, Outer South, 2009)
Not much into the Bright Eyes records, but I love this one.

994. "Ballerina" (Mike McGlone, To Be Down, 2002)
Mike McGlone is best known for playing Patrick in "The Brothers McMullen" or Francis in "She's the One", but he's also an accomplished musician. He's currently known for doing those Rod Serlingesque Geico commercials. Great voice over guy, too. Very talented.

993. "Heaven Beside You" (Alice in Chains, Alice in Chains, 1995)
We miss your contributions to music, Layne Staley.

992. "Tangled Up in Blue" (Bob Dylan, Dylan, 2007)
I don't own any Bob Dylan records, just a compilation box set called Dylan. I was "late to lunch" with Dylan, but I'm sure if I do this list again 20 years from now, he will have a lot more entries.

991. "All My Life" (Foo Fighters, One by One, 2002)
One of my favorite bands, awesome live. This is the last song of the 1st of 100 playlists in Fugazzi Grand. "Done, done, on to the next one"

990. "Miss You" (The Rolling Stones, Some Girls, 1978)
I would have loved to seen these guys in their prime.

989. "Burndt Jamb" (Weezer, Maladroit, 2002)
This record was highly anticipated as the follow up to "The Green Album". The band would post the demos as they were recording them, which was kind of neat. Maladroit will always be a favorite.

988. "Valotte" (Julian Lennon, Valotte, 1984)
For the longest time, I thought this was John Lennon. It's a great song either way.

987. "Spoon" (Dave Matthews Band, Before These Crowded Streets, 1998)
This is the duet with Alanis. Great mood, a great finisher to a great album.

986. "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" (Elton John, The Lion King, 1994)
I'm sure I'll be made fun of for some songs, but Elton John is one of my all time favorite vocalists, and this is a great vocal.

985. "Life Goes By" (The Special Goodness, Land Air Sea, 2003)
Pat Wilson's baby. The drummer for Weezer is also a really good guitar player, and put out a few albums as "The Special Goodness".

984. "Karma Chameleon" (Culture Club, At Worst... , 1983)
Wasn't sure this would make it, but I couldn't escape its catchiness. You win Boy George. You always do.

983. "Allentown" (Billy Joel, The Nylon Curtain, 1982)
I wonder if I have this to low. Damnit, it's too late.

982. "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" (Harry Connick Jr, 20, 1988)
I love this version, a duet with Dr John. Connick is an all time favorite, whatever he does.

981. "100 Days, 100 Nights" (Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, 100 Days 100 Nights, 2007)
The very first song I ever heard on my Paste samplers. If you haven't heard of it, Paste is an awesome music magazine. You can subscribe to their digital version, and for $2.98 a month, you get the magazine, 2 albums and a 20 song playlist every month. Great deal, and great music.

Fugazzi Grand Appetizer

You have been so patient. Here are the top 20 songs that did not make Fugazzi Grand. I will list the name of the song, the artist that recorded it, the album it appeared on, and the year it was released).... ENJOY !!

1020 and 1019. "Sirius" and "Eye in the Sky" (The Alan Parsons Project, Eye in the Sky, 1982)
Sirius is an awesome instrumental track that has been used in a ton of sporting events, most notably at Chicago Bulls games and as the entrance music for one Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat in the 80's. It's a great song to set the mood for a 2 and a half day playlist. Just imagine this playlist was a concert, this would get the blood pumping. I had to include Eye in the Sky along side it, because the two songs just sound like they belong together.

1018. "Mickey" (Tony Basil, Best of Toni Basil, 1980)
Kind of a novelty song, but incredibly catchy. This playlist has to be fun, and this is fun.

1017. "Pump Up the Jam" (Technotronic, Pump Up the Jam, 1989)
Come on, now, don't pretend you didn't love this song.

1016. "Freeze-Frame" (The J Geils Band, Flashback, 1981)
One of my early MTV memories, always loved this song, great video. Peter Wolf doesn't get his due as a great artist.

1015. "Hang On Sloopy" (The McCoys, Hang On Sloopy, 1965)
One of my daughter's favorite songs. She likes to replace Sloopy with Daddy. I replace Sloopy with Gracie. Good clean fun.

1014. "Walk of Life" (Dire Straits, Brothers in Arms, 1985)
Mark Knopfler has done as much great stuff as a solo act as he did with Dire Straits, but this is one of my favorites of his. Does anyone remember the video with the baseball footage ?

1013. "Everybody Loves You Now" (Billy Joel, Cold Spring Harbor, 1971)
This is one of the better Billy Joel songs recorded before Billy Joel became Billy Joel. Great melody, great lyrics. A concert staple.

1012. "Everything Hits At Once" (Spoon, Girls Can Tell, 2001)
Ironically, Kevin Schneider burned this for me, but hates these guys now. I dig them.

1011. "LDN" (Lily Allen, Alright, Still, 2007)
Saw her on SNL three years ago, and loved it from the first listen. Very catchy and fun.

1010. "Say You Love Me" (Fleetwood Mac, Greatest Hits, 1975)
Respect, but this will be the last you see of the Mac on this list.

1009. "16 Candles" (The Crests, 16 Candles, 1958)
Another song my daughter has fun with. I heard her singing "17 candles" one night, cracking herself up. You see, the exaggeration is funny.

1008. "Fugue for Tinhorns" (Guys and Dolls, old, it's an old song)
One of my all time favorite musicals, and movies. Can do. Can do.

1007. "Man in the Box" (Alice in Chains, Facelift, 1990)
My first ex-wife got me in to these guys. Still love this one.

1006. "I Got a Man" (Positive K, Love Hip Hop, 1992)
I'm not a huge hip hop fan, but this will forever be on this self-published author's ipod. The book is called "Two Loves: The Story of a Baseball Polygamist". Forgive the cheap plug. I'm such a whore...

1005. "Band on the Run" (Paul McCartney, Good Evening New York City, 2009)
This is from his historic concert at Citi Field last year. I almost included the Foo Fighters version, but can't find it.

1004. "Rapunzel" (Dave Matthews Band, Before These Crowded Streets, 1998)
My favorite "Dave" album, by far....

1003. "Even Flow" (Pearl Jam, Ten, 1991)
It took me a long time to get into these guys. In high school, I was more of a Nirvana guy, but over time, I've come to like and respect this band. Ten is still an awesome record.

1002. "A Hard Day's Night" (The Beatles, A Hard Day's Night, 1964)
I know what you're thinking. If this is 1002, I really can't wait to see the rest of the list.

1001. "1000 Songs" (Kings Go Forth, The Outsiders are Back, 2010)
I went to school with Andy Noble, although, we never met. Can you think of a more appropriate song than "1000 songs" to lead you into a playlist that features 1000 songs? I submit that you cannot !!

My apologies

Ummmm, this is awkward. It turns out that giving you great people a million song playlist doesn't work for my girlfriend, Amber, or my immediate family. 500 songs a day would probably take about 6 hours a night to prepare, and I would have to do this every day, non-stop, for the better part of 5 years. It's just too much time to put into something as trivial as a playlist.

So with that being said, I'm going back to the original plan of Fugazzi Grand ! Tomorrow night, you will get the top 20 songs that did not make the final list. Let me tell you a little bit more about Fugazzi Grand....

Back in 1999, I made a playlist of my top 100 songs of all time, and recorded them on cassettes. I recently re-created that playlist and saved it in my iTunes library, and have been enjoying it ever since. It got me thinking how much my tastes have changed in 11 years. So I thought it would be fun to do it again, only bigger. Back in 1999, Billy Joel had 20 songs in the top 100. He now has 53 songs in Fugazzi Grand, meaning he went from comprising 20% of the list down to 5.3%. Does that mean I like Billy Joel less now than I did 11 years ago? Absolutely not. It means I've expanded by musical taste buds. Alanis Morissette had 3 of 100 songs on my list in 1999, and now has 2 of 1000 in Fugazzi Grand. Does it mean I like Alanis Morissette less now? This is a bad example, because, yes, I like her less now. But I like 2 songs enough to include her on the list.

This list is not a "greatest hits" compilation. The list consists of 100 ten song playlists that build from song number 1000 to the eventual number 1 song. I tried to create a nice build up from 1000 to 1. Don't look to closely at the actual rankings of individual songs, because it's so hard to determine how much better I like #785 over #793, and I was trying to create a nice flow from song to song. I can tell you that any of the top 4 songs could have been #1. I went back and forth, and actually changed my #1 song several different times.

As promised, there is no Kiss, Nickelback, Bon Jovi, Richard Marx, or Jewel. There are also a ton of very talented artists that did not make the list. Not because I don't like them, I just couldn't put them in the top 1000. I'd rather you read on to see who did and didn't make the list, rather than alienate someone by saying a certain favorite is not included. There is plenty of Billy Joel, the Beatles, Elton John, Elvis Costello and Weezer. Those five artists will make up around 16% of the selected songs.

I want to reiterate that this is not my list of what I think the top 1000 songs are of all time. It's a list of my favorites. I'm not trying to stump you, or trying to impress anyone. I'm simply sharing my preferences with you, and hope I can entertain you, and introduce you to some great music. I hope to get good feedback from you, and would love to hear what you are listening to.

I have some people to thank. There are plenty of good people that make a list like this possible. These people have all introduced different kinds of music to me over the years, and I hope I've introduced some good stuff to them....

Todd Kemper, Tiffany Herrera, Matt Schewe, James Redding, Bobby Tanzilo, Stephanie Awe, Kevin Schneider, Howard Goldstein, Scott Radke, Mike Moser, Andy Fefer, Holly Wines, Jamie Armata, Allen Russell, Amber Koloske, my mom, dad, sister, and Paste Magazine (and anyone else I'm leaving out).

Come back tomorrow night for the top 20 songs that did not make the list, and Saturday night for the official premier of Fugazzi Grand !!

It's time !

Only I lied! It's not a thousand song playlist anymore! It's a million! 500 songs a day, for the next 2,000 days !! Behold, I give you Fugazzi Million !!

#1,000,000 (Ghostbusters, Ray Parker Jr.)
#999,999 (Macarena, Los Del Rio)
#999,998 (Glory of Love, Peter Cetera)
#999,997 (Jesus He Knows Me, Genesis)
#999,996 (Your Body is a Wonderland, John Mayer)

Um, hold on one second. I'll be right back.

Fugazzi Grand is coming !

Fugazzi Grand, a 1,000 song compilation that I've been working on, will be coming to The Litmus Configuration on Sunday, August 15th. This will be a list of my all time favorite songs, and I will be revealing 20 songs a day through October 1st, then will be revealing the final 40 songs on my birthday, October 2nd.

I can already tell you that there will be absolutely no Kiss, Nickelback, Bon Jovi or Richard Marx. That's all I can tell you right now. Check back in two weeks for Fugazzi Grand !!
